FREELANCER NEWS FLASH!!
Everyone seems to be enjoying Freelancer, and this while playing it in its basic un-modified form, and at an old lousy graphics resolution.
So a very well done to Kris for putting that one forward.
Some good news is, I've worked out how to make it work in 1920x1080 with 32bit colour, AND still have your hud in the right place.
Also, I've got a sweet dedicated server setup working, able to switch between mods, and even have server-side options for those mods.
Joining is no issue (it also remembers your character).
The Discovery mod we played last lan, while successful , was a basic mod, there are bigger and better conversions available to us, because there is a very keen and commited community out there for this game.
Which brings me to Freeworlds : Tides of War. (again)
It's been announced to be released on 15th December, one day before our next LAN. It's been in the making for years, is purely based on Star Wars and just looks to be an obsolute winner!
Take a look through the following links for screenshots and videos following the development, even You-Tube video's 2 years old show some great work, just do a search in you-tube for 'freeworlds tides of war'

Here is a Freeworlds Tides of War Role playing guide written by one of the developers.
I'm thinking about setting up an internet based server on my home server, that any of us can join to continue our campaigns anytime 24/7 in between lans.
(characters can most likely be copied to LAN server - or better still we organise to run this server from Tony's over internet)

Freelancer received positive results at the last LAN, prompting efforts to get working Mods. Dutchie requested something Star Wars related, and Freeworlds: Tides of War came to the rescue. While the mod is not yet complete, I managed to get my hands on a beta version to play with. In December the full version of the Mod will be released; with full LAN support for dedicated servers.
The Beta version of Freeworlds works smoothly, adding a vast array of new ships, stations, weapons, etc to the mix. One of these is player controlled carriers that other ships can dock into. Very handy for those who run into trouble in the middle of a heavy fight.
The characters we had at the last LAN will port directly into the Beta Mod, starting us in the same spot as the vanilla Freelancer. With any luck, the same will hold true for the full version of Freeworlds; meaning we wont have to start afresh each time we change mods.
You can check out more Mods here if you were interested in seeing what was available. There's still a huge following for Freelancer despite the game being 8 years old. The mods being created also touch up on the graphics, AI, and game mechanics to bring them up to speed with our expectations of games these days.

Well, i took a bit of a look around at Battlefront 2, I have mixed feelings as even I probably found it a little dated now.
But it does have a lot of good things going for it too. Excellent LAN support, including a dedicated server with heaps of options (although oddly i can't seem to prevent bots from joining BOTH teams, unless maybe this can be manipulated by setting max players and ratios etc)
There are heaps of campaigns, including space missions flying the tie fighters and the rest.
As i said it's somewhat dated, but if we can look past that its packed pretty full of good stuff.

To Be Or Not To Be?
From reading around it's unclear if this game will or will not ever see the shelves. Although footage seems to indicate it was well underway.
